Structural Strengthening and Seismic Upgrade Works
Christchurch Casino is currently undertaking structural strengthening and seismic upgrade works to enhance safety and resilience.
Current Changes
- A small section of the Level 1 Main Gaming Floor is temporarily closed with black curtains while carpet replacement is underway.
- The internal carpark is closed to the public; however, ample parking is available at our external Peterborough Street carpark.
- The Café, Skylark, and Monza remain open, offering food, beverages, and entertainment.
What You Need to Know
• Most of the noisy strengthening work is staged to occur while we are closed to minimise disruption. You’ll still be able to enjoy the vibrant Christchurch Casino atmosphere.
• You’ll still be able to enjoy all your usual favourites (like our $15 Meal Deals!), and we’ll have a variety of great promotions and offers available for you.
Why We’re Doing This
We recently engaged Holmes Structural Engineers to conduct a seismic assessment. While our building was previously rated at approximately 70% of New Building Standard (NBS), updated building standards have revised this rating. Some areas now fall below 34% NBS, which may lead to the building being considered earthquake-prone under current regulations.
It’s important to understand buildings under 34% NBS are not necessarily unsafe. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, buildings can still be safely occupied during strengthening works — and many across the country are.
What to Expect During the Works
• Carpark Levels 1 and 2: Work begins January 2026 and is expected to finish by the end of July 2026.
• Noise: Heavy drilling will mostly occur overnight while the Casino is closed. Minor noise may be noticeable during open hours.
• Materials: Epoxy products will be used during the strengthening process. If you’re sensitive to smells, please be aware this may be present at times. To minimise disruption, screens and barriers will be used to create defined work zones.

Some noise is unavoidable; however, most heavy work will occur overnight or in the morning before we open at 12pm. Curtains and barriers will help minimise disruption.
