Structural Strengthening and Seismic Upgrade Works
Christchurch Casino is undertaking structural strengthening and seismic upgrade work.
Level 2 — including Monza Sports Bar and Premium Lounge — is now open!
Parts of Level 1 are currently closed to the public. The Café will remain closed until Friday 15 August, when it will partially reopen with limited tables but a full menu. Food is available from Monza Sports Bar this week. The Baccarat Room is also closed temporarily.
These works will ensure the building continues to meet modern seismic safety standards.
What You Need to Know
• Most of the noisy strengthening work is staged to occur while we are closed to minimise disruption. You’ll still be able to enjoy the vibrant Christchurch Casino atmosphere.
• All other areas of the casino remain open and fully operational — including our main gaming floor, The Café, and Skylark Bar and Lounge.
• You’ll still be able to enjoy all your usual favourites (like our $15 Meal Deals!), and we’ll have a variety of great promotions and offers available for you.
Why We’re Doing This
We recently engaged Holmes Structural Engineers to conduct a seismic assessment. While our building was previously rated at approximately 70% of New Building Standard (NBS), updated building standards have revised this rating. Some areas now fall below 34% NBS, which may lead to the building being considered earthquake-prone under current regulations.
It’s important to understand buildings under 34% NBS are not necessarily unsafe. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, buildings can still be safely occupied during strengthening works — and many across the country are.
What to Expect During the Works
• Work on Level 1 will begin in August 2025 and is expected to be completed mid-December 2025.
• Most of the heavy drilling and cutting will take place overnight while the Casino is closed. However, some minor noise may be noticeable during open hours.
• Epoxy products will be used during the strengthening process. If you’re sensitive to smells, please be aware this may be present at times. To minimise disruption, screens and barriers will be used to create defined work zones.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
• When will the work start and how long will it take?
Work on Level 2 begins in April 2025 and is expected to be completed early July 2025. Work on Level 1 is due to start in July 2025 and is expected to be completed mid-December 2025. We’ll update you further on Level 1 closer to the time.
• Is the casino still open?
Yes! All other areas of Christchurch Casino remain open, including our main gaming floor, The Café, and Skylark Bar and Lounge.
• Is the building safe to be in during these works?
Yes. Buildings with less than 34% NBS are still safe to occupy according to MBIE and the NZ Society for Earthquake Engineers. We’re following expert guidance throughout the process.
• Will there be noise or disruption?
Some noise is unavoidable; however, most heavy work will occur overnight or in the morning before we open at 12pm, and we’ll use barriers to minimise disruption.
• What if I’m sensitive to smells or noise?
Epoxy materials may be used during construction, which could cause mild smells. If you’re sensitive, please speak to a team member for assistance.
• Who can I contact if I have questions during my visit?
Please speak to any friendly team member — we’re here to help!
